    Description

    The item for sale is a pair of proof sets that were issued by the British government in 1970 and 1971.  1970 is the last year that coin denominations were based on fractions of a pound including crowns, schillings and florins.  In 1971 decimal coins were issued in base ten fractions.  The sets were issued to commemorate this historic event.  The coins are double struck with mirrored fields.  The devices are not particularly frosted unlike many modern proof coins. Both sets have a square Queen Elizabeth medal.  The 1970 set has eight coins. The 1971 has six.  The coins are in a hard plastic holder.  The coins are in as struck condition except for some light peripheral toning on some of the copper coins.  The paper based outer packaging has some slight wear.
