    Notable Features:
This necklace was handmade in the Mid Century era. Composed of 14k white gold, the pendant features a beautiful ruby, as well as sparkly quartz. The inclusion of such a large and colorful ruby stone in this pendant is an excellent homage to the bold and creative styles of the Mid Century era, which saw jewelers create jewelry using unusual or uncommon stones, as well as incorporating new designs and re-purposing those from the past to craft entirely new pieces of jewelry.
A single cabochon cut ruby displays an open back to allow light to filter through, giving the stone beautiful red hues. The ruby rests securely in a bezel setting surrounded by nineteen sparkly white quartz stones. The nineteen quartz stones are designed into a sweetheart-shaped wreath. The sweetheart design was made famous by soldiers going off to war and leaving sweetheart jewelry for their loved ones.
The pendant is completed with a 14k white gold standard hoop bale for secure wear on antique chains or necklaces. The pendant has been converted from a brooch and still has its pin stick with c clasp, allowing this pendant to also be worn as a brooch. A classic example of the Mid Century era, this pendant would make a valuable addition to any antique jewelry collection. Don't miss your chance to preserve this piece of cultural history.
    Damage:
    Age appropriate wear.

    The History
The Mid-Century era, 1935 to 1965, encompassed many new styles of art and architecture and this carried over to jewelry making. This exciting time for jewelry saw movements such as Hollywood Regency, Modernism, Brutalism, and the Atomic Age. Native American artisans were also making their mark in the jewelry industry. Artisans used many kinds of metals, gemstones, glass, and experimented with ceramic and wood as well. This era was filled with new and innovative designs, while also rejuvenating and reinventing older styles. The unique jewelry which emerged from this era is still very popular today.
Sweetheart jewelry was an intensely romantic and patriotic fashion that began with World War I and remained through the end of World War II. Soldiers would gift these pieces of jewelry to their wives and sweethearts who remained at home while they were fighting overseas. Many materials and metals were rationed during the great wars, so these pieces were made of alternative materials, such as wood or plastic. Silver was not a rationed material, and was used to create higher quality pieces. This type of jewelry was a reminder and a promise to fighting soldiers all over the world.
Rubies are one of the four precious gemstones and are prized for their pink to blood red colors. The most valued hue of ruby is called blood-red, or pigeon blood, for the bright, rich hue it exhibits. The color of a ruby comes from the element chromium. Rubies have adorned royal and religious jewelry for centuries and were especially esteemed in Asian countries like China and India, where they were thought to bring good fortune. Rubies are graded by color, clarity, cut, and carat. Rubies are often also evaluated based on their geographic origin.
Quartz is the second most abundant mineral found in the Earth’s crust. The name is derived from the German term “quarz” and originated from the Slavic word meaning hard. It is known to be one of the hardest minerals on earth which is why it has been historically utilized in making jewelry. Quartz gemstones are hard, durable and extremely attractive. The stones can come in a variety of colors and hues. Quartz is an inexpensive mineral, while some varieties can be extremely rare, most varieties and sizes are commonly available. It has been used for centuries in the creation of jewelry and other ornamental objects. Quartz is an extremely versatile material that can be cut and carved into many shapes and sizes which has made it an asset historical and antique jewelry. Today, quartz is one of the most important gemstones in the colored stone trade and in jewelry making.
